Clinical notes are the richest data in medicine. I make them usable.

I spent eleven years as a hospital pharmacist, then eighteen building terminology services, decision support, and natural-language-processing products for health systems and life-sciences research. Today I lead a clinical notes program at a real-world data company, turning free text into facts researchers can query.

Clinical text as a data product

I lead the clinical notes program at TriNetX, a global real-world data network: the NLP that turns physician narrative into structured, queryable facts for life-sciences research. I run it end to end, from pricing and governance to the prototypes that set the engineering roadmap.

Product

  • Pilot to launched product. Defined the offerings, took pricing through sign-off, and wrote the launch brief for general availability.
  • Launched multimodal notes search, clinical text beside structured data in the query builder, and a workspace for reading notes on the platform.
  • Set the program's objectives and turned the monthly reporting slide into a live scorecard.
  • Own the data-governance case for commercializing extracted facts and the reference document behind every customer-facing claim.

Scale and quality

  • Multiplied the footprint of contributing organizations and extracted facts, across three countries, in under a year.
  • Doubled the finished NLP pipelines across oncology biomarkers, performance status, smoking, cardiology, and pulmonary modules, each with measured precision.
  • Built the measurement layer: an accuracy inventory with reconciliation checks, a seller-facing data explorer, and the first extracted-versus-loaded gap audit.
  • Cleared a large medication-to-RxNorm mapping backlog without a language model, by reframing the problem to its distinct generic strings.

Prototypes that shipped

  • Clinical note-search copilot on an LLM with Elasticsearch, demoed live at AMIA 2026; now the spec for the production port.
  • An assertion-extraction harness on an open-weight model that showed how much a cohort changes when negated mentions are removed.
  • A multi-agent RFI responder, a program assistant in Slack, a media-monitoring agent over trial registries and FDA feeds, and a de-identification design for the whole corpus.
  • Each one handed to engineering with a spec and tests.

Every job on this line is about the same problem from a different side: how clinical information gets recorded, normalized, and trusted. The pharmacy years are why the informatics years work.
